I haven't tried out easysearch yet, but I have a suggestion:
Instead of creating yet another toolbar to eat up valuable screen space, couldn't you just incorporate your changes into the "search" button on the navagation toolbar?

* Uninstallation For uninstallation see Installation / Uninstallation page.
* "incorporate your changes into the "search" button" We have done some test of this and its something that we will look into more some day.
* "What would be the advantage of a search bar?" We are personaly not to fond of sidebars (neither in Mozilla or IE). And we dont like searching in the URL field either so that's why we came up with this project.
Read more at the Documentation page about the project and what it is all about. (Will be updated as the developing continues.)

Great work! I really wanted XUL applicatipon like this!!
However, I have a problem. When I use Mozilla as root, easyserch works fine. However, it doesn't work in another user(not super user) and there is a message "*** Failed to load overlay chrome://easysearch/content/easysearchOverlay.xul" in the console.
Does anybody have a solution?
Many thanks,

One of the few things IE has over Mozilla these days is the Google Toolbar, made by Google. That thing rocks. I'm glad to see something similar for Mozilla... check out the features of the Google Toolbar, because it's much more than a box to launch a web search, and some of those features would be great in Mozilla!

You are looking for GoogleBar?: http://googlebar.mozdev.org
Easysearch do and will continue to support more than one search engine. Im currently working on some features for the easysearch that will be included into the next release (0.93). But those will and must be general to all searchengines.
Hiroshi and other people that cant get easysearch to work! Contact me at andreas@gnunet.nu.

Don't suppose you could host your 'xpi' install files on mozdev and link to those instead of:
http://www.quickmess.com/mozilla/easysearch_093.xpi
That domain never resolves to an IP from my location, and the installation consistantly fails because of that.
It'd also be nice to be able to download the 'xpi' file to a local drive and apply it to other LAN systems running mozilla.

BTW Andreas-
Would be a lot easy for people to find if it was linked to in the mozdev.org left-orientated link panel of currently hosted mozilla projects. For some reason, it's not linked to, at the moment..

Hi "RandomMozUser". We are having problem uploading the XPI files at the moment to mozdev.org with CVS. That's why we currently are storing them at another server. I will fix this ASAP!
About googlebar! You should contact the googlebar project about this. I'm not involved in that project so I can't help you with that.

Heh.. about the googlebar project not being linked up, well, I was just pointing out why most people passing through mozdev.org would fail to notice its existance, myself included, until you posted that link (thanks, btw).
Looking forward to trying out your EasySearch toolbar once the CVS issues get straightened out.

As someone who contributes to the Googlebar, I'd agree that that Googlebar and Easysearch don't necessarily conflict- the idea behind googlebar is to implement mainly Google's specialty searches, while Easysearch covers a wider range of search engines. Incidentally, I think that the reason we aren't linked to from mozdev directly is that we havn't gotten around to an official announcement yet and so most people who know about us simply watch the "updated" bar. One thing we are working on in the googlebar is trying to improve the find in page function to highlight more search terms on the page (if you've ever pulled a page from Google's cache, you'll know what I mean)- have the developers of easysearch had any more luck so far? The screenshots show a single term highlighted, which is what we've managed to do as well, but ideally we're looking for some way to highlight multiple instances of multiple terms with several colors. Any ideas you might share? (PS- I have frequent problems uploading to CVS on mozdev as well. The trick is to wait 10 minutes and try again, at which point it usually works again. Strange but true.)

Some ppl just complain too much ... What's the point of complaining on something so minute ... If you don't like it, open up emacs (or notepad) download the source code .. and make it work on your system. (I am not a developer on this project) but I get fed up we ppl wast the good faith of others. This is the point of open source, if your not happy with it make changes.

What do you think about including a Google Toolbar-like "Find in Page" feature instead of adding it to the Search Engine Dropdown, so you can "one-click-search" for your keywords on the current site?

The Searchbar doesn't fit to all themes, I guess, this is not tweakable, so, how about making the box appear in the personal toolbar ? then again, how can one add additional search engines. Honestly I'd love to see something like in galeon, where you can put an Input box and the input can be used to create some URL to load. Another neat thing would be to tweak the popup on a word in a document, to use for searching, but I guess, that's more a job for the mozilla team :-)

I think there's a room for improvements in "find in page" function: make a popup menu which allows to search for particular words from search phrase, not only for whole phrase; add option for higlighting searched words in current page.

Hey, I have two questions
1) Anyway we can make easysearch configurable in such a way for each user to add web/search engines? I want a freshmeat search bar in addition to the google one.
2) the text i type in the search box is too big for the size of the box and gets cut off at the end. It is quite annoying. Can you automatically shrink the text or have a max font size option for that box?
- [46] Submitted by: Kareemy on Wednesday July 24th 2002

Hi again. Fixed first question of mine in the previous comment. Thanks. Anotehr issue i have though is with saving preferences. Will the next version automatically save which search engine to use? The inlude/exclude checkboxes in the preferences never get saved for me either. I only want google and freshmeat - but I have to uncheck the others every time I restart mozilla. Also for the In Page button, I want wrap to be set by default. There is no way to save that.
Other than saving these preferences and the text not fitting into the search box its a great app!
Thanks

Hi! The next version will save the preferences for "In Page". But I cant see why the include/exclude searchengines dont work the next time you restart the browser. Please send me an email (andreas@gnunet.nu) so we can talk more about it. I also don't have the problem that the text is to big for the searchbox so it would be great if you would send me an image of how it looks on your computer.

Great Work!! One thing can be improved. I think it would be great if it can be support multiple search bars, such as one for google.com, one for google.com/linux ...etc.

Why is the name of the search engine underlined on mouse over? I can see any benefit of it yet, especially because the underlining appies to the whole field width beyond the actual text. So I turned this "feature" off.
In case anybody wants to turn it off, too:
file "easysearch.jar:/content/easysearch/skin/default.css" section ".esTextLink:Hover" comment out "text-decoration:underline;"
- [52] Submitted by: Andreas on Thursday August 1st 2002
-
To: Eric Kwok I will probably add the ability to support some kind of multisearch. Just don't know how to make it look good. (Please send in suggestions :) The reason why Google/linux etc isn't represented are because that this bar is general to work with all kinds of searchengines. Checkout the Googlebar project for this kind of Google-only features: http://googlebar.mozdev.org
To: Henry James The hover "feature" is supposed to show the user that the text is a link. It will start a new search if you click on the link the same way as it does when you press enter in the search textbox. But it's a good suggestion and I'm thinking of making it optional or atleast showing another mouse pointer. And I agree that the size of the line should fit the name of the search-engine's length.

Hey Andreas,
Thanks for the new release. It fixes all the bugs I had in 0.98. I have another suggestion now though. In the personal toolbar version there is one divider that lets me change the length of the search box, but I would like maybe another one that would let me increase the length of the whole easy search portion of the personal toolbar. Specifically so long names such as "Dictionary.com" will fit completely. I dont want to nitpick at you, but you've written such a great tool, I want to see it perfected :)
Thanks

The new 0.983 release is cool. Problems I reported have been fixed. :)
I suggest to change "In page" to "In Page" (common for UI) and set hover color for the search engine name text and "In Page" to blue, like other text labels on the personal toolbar ("Home", "Bookmarks") do:
.esTextLink:hover {color: blue;}
- [59] Submitted by: Henry James on Tuesday August 20th 2002
-
... and also change the tooltips:
"Choose search engine" to "Choose Search Engine";
"Search on current page" to "Search in Current Page" (the label says "in page", not "on page", right?);
"Search on current page, preferences" to "Set Preferences for Search in Current Page" or something alike.

Two other issues:
1. I would like to have a setting to have my search result opened in current tab / new tab / new window by default (without pressing ctrl, shift, whatever).
2. The "fix text size" is not working, because the smallest size (8 pt for Tahoma) is already too big. Maybe there is a way to increase the height of the personal toolbar (and thus the text field)?
- [61] Submitted by: Andreas on Friday August 23rd 2002

The shortcut Ctrl-Shift-F is used by Mozilla for loading the default search engine's search page. While EasySearch is a cool thing to make fast simple searches, going to a more detailed search page with lots of options should not be blocked. Please find another shortcut or even better, let users specify what shortcut (if any) they want.

Great little add on.
I have been using Opera for a while, and one thing that I like about it is the lttle search bar you have next to the address bar (along with the gestures). Now that Mozilla supplies both of these, more reasons to use it.
I tend to like as much space as possible when browsing so I tend to have the personal toolbar minimised - could you please create a version that takes up some space on the navigation toolbar, next to the address bar? An option to change what bar it was on (personal or navigation) would be great.
Thanks, Daniel

I like Tom's suggestion on the 16th December.
This maybe could be done with a key sequence from the search box, similar to Ctrl+Enter opens a new tab.
My suggestion is to have a version that incorporates this into the menu bar if possible. As the menu doesn't take up the whole screen, it would be a good place. If only Mozilla was flexible with menus/toolbars like that of Internet Explorer. I hate Internet Explorer but the only good feature I find is the ability to move menus and toolbars around to anywhere I want.
I am using Linux, so I don't have to worry about IE anyway. :-)

I'm using Mozilla 1.2.1 on RedHat Linux 7.3, and recently installed EasySearch. Great Feature!
One minor problem, though: preference changes seem to require a restart of Mozilla to take effect. This is annoying.
I'd also to repeat certain feature requests others have made, in descending order of importance:
1) Showing In Page while minimized, possibly as part of the same dropdown allowing switching of search engines, or as just a tiny litle icon instead of the full button
2) Option to put the EasySearch bar into other toolbars. Both navigation bar and menu bar have been suggested. I would prefer the former. Taking out that gigantic search button--which can be done in the preferences--and shrinking the address dropdown would make room for it, especially for those of us who have our preferences set to show buttons as pictures only.
3) Option to open search bars in new tab/window. Currently, I just open a new tab and then run my search, but doing it all in one step would be nice.
I can be reached at ejjess2(at)uky(dot)edu.

Hi!
Yes. I now that some preferences needs a restart of Mozilla and mostly those that you probably don't use each day, right ? Its for performance reasons. As for nr 2), It would be a great future but I honestly don't now how to create it that way. I have talked to some of the programmers here at mozdev without any luck. If someone can help me please send me a mail.
As for nr 3), Just press ALT, CTRL when you press enter:

I have had a glitch under Win32 (W2K) for quite a while now, and I *think* it's down to easysearch: I keep my main Net search pref. set to Google, same as my easysearch default.
But, whenever I start moz, afresh, both have been reset to 'Netscape'. Any ideas what's causing that? May be worth noting that I have no ES search history then either - I have it in my mind that it should/used to keep that between sessions. Is that right?

Is there any project that allows you to enter a search in the URL field (ala Opera "g mozilla mouse gestures") using a simple code? I realize that for novice users this might be a little confusing, but for power users, the convenience is undeniable. It doesn't take up any more screen space (like easysearch, googlebar), and does not require moving the mouse (like the built in search button). I have been using Opera for a while now, and I would love to switch to Mozilla, but really, this is one of the only things stopping me.
If anyone has some suggestions about a project already in motion, or if I am missing some feature, or if you even want to start a project (I'd be happy to do the coding, don't know where to start), please let me know.

ES worked great in Mozilla but doesn't function in Firebird. Please get it to work in FB since it was one of the most used extensions I had.

Going in to the project I was a bit hesitant at
first. It seemed to much information to handle right
away. But as I got into it more and more it turns
out it is really possible to contribute something
even as a beginner to on-the-fly programming. I'm looking forward to continuing to learn more and in the soon future start my own project. - [124] Submitted by: jims on Tuesday September 23rd 2003
